Our first year

The picking is almost complete, the vines are now starting to change into their autumn colours and the evenings start to cool….but fear not, we have extended the verandah coverage with canvas awning, which also assists with extra shade on those, now rare, sunny days.

Our first full year has seen some substantial growth, and we have established new friendships with customers, as well as cementing the “old” ones. Our sincerest thanks to those that have shared the exciting year with us.

Our congratulations also go to Ian and Donna Doolan (formerly Martin) who allowed us to cater for their wedding on Saturday February 25th. The Martins are long time customers, and it was an honour to be a part of this special celebration! The heavy rain storm (or “Cyclone Katrina” as Donna referred to it!) didn’t spoil their eagerly awaited arrival on the Harley Davidsons ...and Donna was not going to let it!

Autumn Menu

Rustic Charm is the place to bring your international visitors- Scott's signature dish, Kangaroo Sirloin, is certainly a winner!  It doesn't disappoint this menu, being served with sweet potato mash and beetroot relish.  Lamb shanks are of course back as we head into the cooler months, along with old fashioned bread and butter pudding, and the mocha tart is to die for!

Don't forget our 2 course Lunch Special – only $25.50 for two courses includes a glass of Wild Cattle Creek Wine.

Our Light Meal menu is available until late and offers some great options for light lunches, evening suppers in the wine bar by the fire, or snacks in between meals!  Available Wednesday to Sunday.

Vintage Update

Vintage in the valley has certainly arrived early this year! As we head into April, only merlot and cabernet are left to harvest.

Fruit quality has been excellent with all varieties.  Our previous two vintages of Wild Cattle Creek Sauvignon Blanc have resulted in Gold and Bronze medals, and we reckon the 2006 will be worthy of similar.  In fact, 2006 across all varieties will result in some lovely wines with outstanding flavours.

The firs vintage of Pinot Gris from Wandin, 2004 Cabernet Merlot and the 2005 Chardonnay will be available towards the end of May, while the sparkling is still maturing and on schedule for a Spring Racing Carnival Release.

Preparation is under way to plant a small area of Sangiovese at Wild Cattle Creek in the upcoming spring.  Sangioves variety finds its best expression in and around Tuscany and provides the classic component in the red wines of Cianti.  We eagerly await it first vintage in years to come!

Chef's Recipe –
Baked Apple with rhubarb & hazelnuts

For this recipe, we choose to use locally grown Granny Smiths and Wild About Fruit apple juice.

6 large apples   100gm butter
100gm brown sugar     300ml apple juice
1 vanilla bean, split   6 stalks rhubarb,
lightly stewed

Core the apples and prick the skin with a fork.  Roll in softened butter and sugar. Cook in 180°c oven for 10 minutes.  In food processor combine hazelnuts and rhubarb, then divide mixture evenly between the apples. Pour over apple juice, add vanilla bean and cook for further 20 minutes, or until tender, basting occasionally.

New Hours

As of April 1st until October 31st ,  the restaurant and cellar door will be closed on Monday and Tuesdays: with the exception of Public Holidays.  The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner (and in between snacks) from Wednesday to Sunday only.

New Release dinner

To celebrate the release of the 2004 Cabernet Merlot and the 2005 Pinot Gris from Wild Cattle Creek, we invite you to the inaugural New Release dinner on Saturday June 24th.  Winemaker Jeff Wright has been working with Executive Chef Scott to design a menu to compliment not only our new releases, but a few other wines.

The night will also have a fun element with a blind tasting of our Cabernet Merlots, wine trivia and lots of prizes to be won!  Orders will be taken for Wild Cattle Creek wines at 10% discount on the night.

$65 per person includes food and wine.

Wine Club members: $60 per person.

* This will be followed by a Spring Fizz dinner in late October, when our eagerly awaited Sparkling wine will be released.
